SpeedFactory MLSS-HP Head Gasket - Honda D Series VTEC

If you've ever boosted a D16 and chased a head gasket leak past 250whp, you already know the frustration this gasket was built to end. SpeedFactory made their own high-performance MLSS-HP gasket for SOHC D-series VTEC, and the big deal here is the integrated fire-ring. The name stands for Multi-Layer Stainless Steel plus high-performance silicone beads, and it'll seal anything from a clean stock setup all the way up to a high-compression, nitrous, turbo, or supercharged D16. If you're building a boosted D-series and you're tired of fighting your head gasket, this is the one you want.

The Fire-Ring Is Why You're Here

Here's the real-world problem this solves. Most turbo D-series SOHC VTEC guys are running a stock block and head with upgraded internals, making two to four times the power Honda ever intended, and a lot of them hit a wall around 250+whp where the head gasket just won't stay sealed no matter what. Upgraded head studs help, but on these D16s that often isn't enough on its own. So SpeedFactory added a folded gas stopper ring, a fire-ring, around each combustion chamber, and that's what finally gives you a reliable combustion seal where a plain gasket gives up. If your boosted D16 has been pushing coolant or losing compression up high, the fire-ring is the fix you've been looking for.

Why It Seals When A Stock-Style Gasket Won't

Beyond the fire-ring, there's real engineering packed into this thing. It's a 4-layer stainless design at 0.036" thick, where your OEM gasket is a 3-layer setup at about 0.028". That extra thickness makes up for the material your machine shop takes off when they surface your head and block, and the 4-layer build with its specialized embossments raises the active combustion sealing height, which is exactly what you need on a boosted engine that lifts the head a little under big cylinder pressure. SpeedFactory also worked a silicone bead right into it around the oiling passages, so your fluid passages stay sealed up tight, and there's an elastomeric coating across the face that fills in the surface imperfections you'll never get perfectly flat. It's made by an OE-certified shop too (ISO 9001, ISO/TS16949, ISO 14001), so you're not rolling the dice on quality.

Run Good Studs With It

Don't bolt this down with tired old head bolts and expect miracles. Upgraded head studs aren't optional on a boosted D16, they're what hold your clamping force consistent so the gasket and fire-ring can do their job. Pair this with a quality SpeedFactory head stud kit, torque everything to spec, and you've given your D-series about the best shot at a leak-free seal it can get.

The Size You Need

This comes in a 76.00mm bore, which covers a 75.00mm to 76.00mm bore, so it fits the standard and lightly overbored D16 builds these are made for. Just make sure your bore falls in that range before you order.

Pushing Big Power? Read This First

Straight talk on the limits, because this matters. This gasket and its fire-ring will take you a long way on a stock-block D16, but if you're chasing beyond 600whp, you've outgrown a stock block entirely, and SpeedFactory's call there is a sleeved block with O-rings and a standard Cometic MLS gasket. And one important detail if you do run O-rings with this gasket: the O-ring has to sit outside the fire-ring, not on it. Get that wrong and you'll undo the seal you're trying to build, so plan your O-ring placement around the fire-ring.

Features

  • MLSS-HP (Multi-Layer Stainless Steel plus silicone bead) head gasket built for high performance use
  • Integrated fire-ring for a reliable combustion seal on boosted D-series engines
  • 4-layer stainless design with specialized embossments that raise active combustion sealing height
  • 0.036" (0.914mm) thick to make up for surfaced decks, versus the OEM 3-layer 0.028"
  • Internal silicone bead around the oiling passages for better fluid sealing
  • Elastomeric coating that seals minor surface imperfections
  • OE-certified manufacturer (ISO 9001, ISO/TS16949, ISO 14001)

Fits These Cars

  • 1992-1995 Honda Civic EX/Si (D16Z6)
  • 1996-2000 Honda Civic EX (D16Y8)
  • 1993-1997 Honda Del Sol Si (D16Z6)

Note: SpeedFactory MLSS-HP (Multi-Layer Stainless Steel plus silicone bead) head gasket for Honda SOHC D-series VTEC engines, fitting the D16Z6 and D16Y8. Features an integrated fire-ring (folded gas stopper ring) around the combustion chambers for a reliable seal on boosted D16 builds, where many engines struggle with head gasket sealing past 250whp. A 4-layer stainless design at 0.036" (0.914mm) thick, versus the OEM 3-layer 0.028", with specialized embossments to raise active combustion sealing height, an internal silicone bead around the oiling passages, and an elastomeric coating for surface irregularities. Built by an OE-certified manufacturer (ISO 9001, ISO/TS16949, ISO 14001). Available in 76.00mm bore (for a 75.00mm to 76.00mm bore). Upgraded head studs are strongly recommended; pair with a SpeedFactory head stud kit. For builds beyond 600whp, a sleeved block with O-rings and a standard Cometic MLS gasket is recommended. If using O-rings with this gasket, the O-ring must be placed outside the fire-ring. Fits the 1992-1995 Honda Civic EX/Si, 1996-2000 Honda Civic EX, and 1993-1997 Honda Del Sol Si. One head gasket per order.
