MOMO Start Racing Seat - FIA Approved, HANS Compatible Fiberglass Seat

A racing seat has two jobs. Hold you still so you can actually drive the car, and protect you when something goes wrong. The MOMO Start does both without asking you to spend like you're funding a race team. It's an FIA approved fiberglass racing seat that's HANS compatible, and at 8.1 kg it's the lightest seat MOMO makes. If you're building a track car, a time attack setup, or a proper competition car and you need a seat that'll pass tech inspection, this is one of the most sensible places to start.

FIA Approved And HANS Compatible

This is the part that matters most if you're competing. The Start carries FIA 8855-1999 homologation, so it's a real competition seat rather than a track-day lookalike. It's also HANS compatible, meaning the shoulder openings are shaped to work correctly with a head and neck restraint. That combination is what most sanctioning bodies want to see, and it's the difference between rolling through tech and getting turned away at the gate.

One honest heads-up: FIA homologations carry expiration dates, and the 8855-1999 standard is gradually being replaced by 8855-2021 across various series. Before you buy, check what your specific series and class currently require and confirm the homologation date on the seat you receive. Rules vary by organization and they change, so it's worth a five-minute call to your club instead of finding out at the track.

Built From Fiberglass, Finished Properly

The shell is fiberglass, and MOMO upholstered the whole thing so there's no bare fiberglass showing on the back. That sounds cosmetic, and partly it is, but a fully finished back also means you're not dealing with an exposed rough surface rubbing against your rear seat area or interior panels. The covering is black velour, and it's self-extinguishing fabric, which is exactly what you want in a car where fire is a real consideration rather than a theoretical one.

Five Belt Openings And Four Side Mounts

You get five seat belt openings, which gives you the routing you need for a proper harness setup, including a 5-point or 6-point arrangement. Pair it with a set of MOMO harnesses and everything lines up the way it should. Mounting is handled through four side fixing points, which is the standard side-mount arrangement, so it works with common side mount brackets and sliders. Just make sure you're sourcing brackets specific to your chassis, since those are sold separately and are vehicle-specific.

Dimensions

Racing seats fit tighter than street seats by design, so check these numbers against yourself and against the space in your car before you order. All measurements are in millimeters and include the padding.

Measurement Start
External max width at shoulders (A)580
Seat bottom to mid shoulders (B)560
External max width of side bolsters (C)540
Total height of seat back (D)870
Seat bottom max external width (E)410
Seat inner width, belt hole area (F)400
Bottom length (G)490
Seat back width (N)345
Seat side width (O)370

Treat these as a guide. Small variations happen in production, and the fit you care about most is the inner width at the belt holes and the shoulder width, since those determine whether you're held in place or swimming around.

Who This Is For

This is for the driver who's done sliding around in a factory seat and needs something that'll hold them through a corner and pass inspection on race day. Track days, time attack, club racing, or a dedicated competition build. Confirm your series requirements, order your chassis-specific brackets alongside it, and get yourself planted properly in the car.
