The head of the valve can stretch, the face can erode, and in the worst case the valve head breaks off and drops into the cylinder. Do you need them? If you're on boost, running E85 at high cylinder pressure, or building a high-RPM N\/A engine that'll see sustained track time, yes. If your K20 runs stock power on the street, your factory valves are fine. Expect durability from these, not horsepower. Any flow gain from a stock-size valve is small. The real reason to install them is knowing the exhaust valves won't be what fails.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eWhy Inconel\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost valves are stainless steel. That works up to a point, but stainless gets soft and stretches as it gets hotter. Inconel is a nickel superalloy, the same family of metals used in turbine engines and turbo housings. It holds onto its strength at far higher temperatures, so the valve head keeps its shape and the seal stays good even after hours of heat soak.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eFinish Details That Matter\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach valve is CNC finished, then nitrided. Nitriding is a surface-hardening treatment that helps the stem resist wear where it slides in the guide. The stems are undercut, meaning they're thinner just above the valve head, so there's less metal sitting in the port and getting in the way of the flow. The backs of the valve heads are swirl polished, a smooth finish that helps air flow off them cleanly. The tips are hardened where the rocker arm pushes on them so they don't wear down.
