Casting is cheap and works fine at stock power, but cast aluminum is brittle. Under boost, all it takes is a bit of detonation, and the ring lands crack or a chunk breaks off the edge of the piston crown. That's how most boosted D16s on stock pistons end up: one lean pull or one tank of bad gas, and you've got a cylinder with no compression. On top of that, the factory pistons give you about 9.2:1 compression. That's high for boost, so you have to run less of it before the engine starts knocking.

This Supertech kit fixes both problems. The pistons are forged, so they're tough enough to survive the occasional detonation that would crack a cast piston. They also drop compression to 8.8:1, so you can run more boost before knock becomes a problem. Supertech rates them for up to 42 psi on alcohol fuel. That's a rating for the pistons alone, though. Your D16's block, head gasket, and factory rods give out long before that. For a realistic street turbo D16, these pistons let you set boost with real margin to spare instead of just hoping it holds.

4032 Alloy: The Trade-Off

Forged pistons mostly come in two aluminum alloys: 4032 and 2618. 4032 has more silicon, so it expands less as it heats up. That lets your machine shop run tighter clearance between the piston and cylinder wall. You get a quieter cold start, less piston slap, and rings that seal better on a street car. 2618 expands more and is a bit more forgiving of heavy detonation, which is why all-out race builds tend to use it. For a street turbo D16 that sees daily miles, 4032 is a good fit. Just tune it carefully, since it's less forgiving of detonation than 2618.

Forging, Coating, and Finish

Forging squeezes the aluminum into shape under massive pressure instead of pouring it into a mold. The metal's grain ends up packed tight and following the shape of the piston, so it's much tougher than a cast piston that's full of tiny voids. Supertech then CNC machines each piston. The skirts have grooves that cut down on contact area and friction against the cylinder wall. The pin bores are reamed and honed for an exact fit to the wrist pin.

Each piston is phosphate-coated. The coating works as a dry lubricant, which helps the skirts during the first few seconds of a cold start before oil gets everywhere. It also keeps the rings from microwelding to the ring grooves under heat. That's when the rings pick up aluminum from the grooves, start sticking, and stop sealing.

What's in the Kit

Forged 4032 pistons, 8.8:1 compression

Piston rings

Chromoly wrist pins

Wire locks

Build Notes

Don't drop new pistons into a block that hasn't been to the machine shop. Have the shop measure the pistons and bore and hone each cylinder to the piston-to-wall clearance Supertech specifies. Gap the rings for boost, too. Turbo engines need a wider top ring gap than N/A ones, because the rings get hotter. If the gap is too tight, the ring ends can butt together and break the ring land. While the engine's apart, plan on stronger rods. The factory D16 rods are usually the next part to fail once you add boost. Your tune also has to account for the lower compression and the boost you're running.

Fitment

1992-1995 Honda Civic EX and Si (EG) - D16Z6

1993-1995 Honda Civic del Sol Si (EG1) - D16Z6

D16Z6 engines only.
