Headers hit it, the oil pan crowds it, and there is no clean place to hang a front torque mount. The Innovative Mounts Front Crossmember (59111) is a black steel replacement for that beam on the ED, EE, and EF chassis, built to open up the space underneath a B or D series and to give you somewhere to bolt a fourth mount when the engine starts making real torque.

What It Is and Why It Works

Start with what this is not, because one large retailer has it listed under a traction bar URL and buyers get confused. This is a replacement front crossmember, the structural beam that bolts across the front of the subframe. Innovative's competition traction bar for the same chassis is a completely different part number. If you came here looking for a traction bar, this is not it.

What 59111 actually does is threefold. It clears factory and aftermarket headers, which is the reason most EF builds buy one. It carries a front mount point so you can run a connected front torque mount and turn a three-mount B-series setup into a proper four-mount arrangement, which is what you want once a B18C or a boosted B20B starts twisting the drivetrain against the chassis. And it ships with washers that let you adjust caster and center the wheels in the arches, which are optional to use but genuinely useful on a car that has been lowered and never quite sat right since.

It bolts up with the OEM crossmember and subframe hardware, so nothing has to be fabricated or sourced separately. Innovative lists it as CAD/CAM designed and stress analyzed with a lifetime warranty, and it fits the ED, EE, and EF chassis with either a B or a D series and either a manual or an automatic transmission. That last part matters more than it sounds: this is not swap-only. A D15 or D16 car that is still on its original engine can run 59111 and get the header clearance without touching the motor.

You can keep the factory radiator behind it, or you can use the crossmember as the excuse to move to a 92-00 Civic half size radiator, which is where a lot of EF builds end up once the engine bay gets busy. Innovative sells small brackets that adapt that half size radiator to the 88-91 chassis, and they are worth ordering in the same box if that is the direction you are going.

Specs

Part number

59111

Type

Replacement front crossmember

Material

Steel, black finish

Chassis

ED, EE, EF (88-91 Civic and CRX)

Engines

B-series and D-series

Transmission

Manual or automatic

Header clearance

Clears factory and aftermarket headers (per manufacturer)

Torque mount provision

Front mount point for a connected front torque mount, supports 4-mount setups

Caster adjustment

Washers included, optional to use

Radiator

Factory radiator or 92-00 Civic half size radiator

Mounting hardware

Reuses OEM crossmember and subframe hardware

Design

CAD/CAM designed, stress analyzed (per manufacturer)

Weight

22 lbs (per manufacturer)

Warranty

Lifetime (per manufacturer)

Fitment

Year

Make

Model

Trim

Engine

1988-1991

Honda

Civic

Base, DX, LX, EX, Si, Wagovan, RT 4WD

B-series or D-series

1988-1991

Honda

CRX

Base, DX, HF, Si

B-series or D-series

This covers the whole 4th gen Civic and 2nd gen CRX range, stock D15 and D16 cars included, and it works before or after a B16A or B18C conversion. Several retailers repeat a claim that it is significantly lighter than the factory beam, but Innovative does not publish that anywhere and the part is listed at 22 lbs, so we are not going to promise you a diet. Nobody has published a 60-foot or quarter-mile figure for it either. If your goal is launch traction specifically, the competition traction bar for this chassis is the part that targets that, and it is sold separately.

Two things get ordered too late. The first is the bushing and caster adjustment set, which upgrades what the included washers can do and is the natural companion if you are chasing alignment on a lowered EF. The second is the front torque mount itself, which comes in separate B-series and D-series versions. The crossmember gives you the mounting point; it does not include the mount. Decide which engine family you are running and add the matching one, or you will have a bracket bolted to nothing.

Plan the install for a day, not an evening. The subframe hardware on a thirty-five-year-old EF is rarely cooperative, and Innovative recommends the work be done by someone who does this for a living. They also will not take the part back once it has been bolted down and shows bolt impressions, so test fit against your header and oil pan before you torque anything to spec.

Year

Make

Model

Trim

Engine

1988-1991

Honda

Civic

Base, DX, LX, EX, Si, Wagovan, RT 4WD

B-series or D-series

1988-1991

Honda

CRX

Base, DX, HF, Si

B-series or D-series

This covers the whole 4th gen Civic and 2nd gen CRX range, stock D15 and D16 cars included, and it works before or after a B16A or B18C conversion.
