As the electrode wears and the gap widens over tens of thousands of miles, the spark gets weaker and less consistent. You don't get a dramatic failure, you get a slow decline: slightly rougher idle, a little less crisp throttle response, marginally worse fuel economy, and eventually a misfire when a plug finally gives up.

Because it happens slowly, most people don't realize how much a car has dulled until they fit fresh plugs and it wakes back up. On a VTEC K-series that lives in its upper rev range, clean, consistent ignition matters even more, which is why fresh plugs are one of the cheapest ways to keep the engine feeling right.

NGK Is The Standard For These Engines

NGK is what Honda specifies, and for good reason.

These are OEM-quality NGK plugs, the same brand and standard the K-series came with from the factory. Spark plugs are a part where the wrong choice, incorrect heat range, poor quality, causes real problems, from fouling to detonation, so matching the OEM spec is the safe, correct move. A coil delivers the spark that fires the plug, and when it weakens or fails, that cylinder misfires, which is what you feel and what trips the light. The insulation degrades over decades of heat cycling, and once it cracks or breaks down, voltage escapes to ground instead of reaching the plug. That cylinder misfires, especially under load or in damp weather, which is exactly when you'll notice it.

People chase these misfires everywhere, plugs, coil, fuel, when tired wires are a frequent culprit. Or maybe you're getting rough idle at stoplights and the car feels like it's missing. Your stock spark plugs are wearing out. The center electrode's eroded, the gap's opened up, and now your ignition system can't fire the plug consistently under boost. We've seen it a thousand times. Stock plugs last 60,000-80,000 miles if you're lucky, then they start falling off. NGK Ruthenium HX plugs are what you replace them with. These aren't your basic copper plugs. The center electrode's made from ruthenium with a 0.4mm fine wire design that fires with way less voltage than copper or standard iridium. That means cleaner combustion, smoother throttle response, and no more stumbles when you're getting on it. If you're running a stock turbo or mild bolt-ons on your Civic Si, Type R, Integra, Accord 2.0T, TLX, or RDX, these are the plugs you want.

Here's What Happens When Your Plugs Wear Out

Your K20C or L15B motor's a turbocharged direct injection motor. That combination beats the hell out of spark plugs. Direct injection means the fuel's being sprayed into the combustion chamber at 2,000+ PSI. The turbocharger means you're running 15-20 PSI of boost. Every time the plug fires, it's creating an arc across the gap in a high-pressure, high-temperature environment. That arc erodes the center electrode. After 60,000-80,000 miles, the electrode's worn down enough that the gap's opened from 0.031 inch to 0.040 or 0.045 inch. A wider gap needs more voltage to fire. Eventually your ignition coils can't generate enough voltage to jump the gap consistently, especially when you're under boost and cylinder pressures are sky-high. That's when you get misfires. The car stumbles when you're accelerating. Idle gets rough. Sometimes you'll get a flashing check engine light if the misfire's bad enough. Replace the plugs and all of that goes away.

Why Ruthenium and Platinum Matter

NGK builds these plugs with a 0.4mm ruthenium center electrode and a 0.8mm platinum ground electrode. Ruthenium's one of the hardest, most wear-resistant metals you can use for a spark plug electrode. It's way more expensive than copper or iridium but it lasts longer and it erodes way slower. The 0.4mm fine wire diameter means the electrode needs less voltage to create a spark compared to a thicker electrode. Your ignition coils aren't working as hard and the spark's more consistent across the entire RPM range. The platinum ground electrode's just as wear-resistant as the ruthenium center electrode. Cheap plugs use a nickel alloy ground electrode that erodes fast. Platinum doesn't. You're getting 100,000+ miles out of these plugs if you're driving normally. If you're tracking the car or running more boost, you'll still get way more life than stock plugs.

They Don't Seize in the Head

NGK coats the threads with trivalent metal plating. If you've ever pulled spark plugs out of a Honda motor that's got 100,000 miles on it, you know the threads can seize in the aluminum head. Sometimes you're fighting with a breaker bar trying to get the plug to turn. Sometimes the plug breaks and you're drilling it out. The trivalent plating prevents that. It's an anti-corrosion, anti-seize coating that keeps the threads from bonding to the aluminum. When you pull these plugs out in 60,000 or 80,000 miles, they're going to turn smooth and come out clean. No drama, no broken plugs, no stripped threads.

Heat Range 8 Is Right for Most Builds

The heat range on these plugs is 8. That's correct for stock K20C and L15B motors and it's also fine if you're running mild mods like an intake, exhaust, and a tune. Heat range determines how fast the plug dissipates heat from the tip. Too cold of a plug and it'll foul from carbon buildup. Too hot of a plug and you'll get pre-ignition or detonation. Heat range 8 keeps the plug at the right operating temperature for stock boost levels and stock or mildly modified power levels. If you've got a bigger turbo and you're making 400+ whp or you're running E85 and serious boost, you'll probably need to step down to a colder plug like a heat range 7 or 6. Talk to your tuner. For everyone else running a stock turbo or bolt-ons, heat range 8's right.

Pre-Gapped and Ready to Go

These plugs come pre-gapped at 0.031 inch from NGK. That's the factory spec for K20C and L15B motors. You don't need to gap them. Don't gap them. Just pull your old plugs out, screw these in, torque them to 13 lb-ft (that's the Honda spec for these motors), and you're done. If you over-torque them, you'll crack the ceramic insulator and the plug's trash. Use a torque wrench. Don't guess. NGK rates these plugs for 120,000 miles but that's under ideal conditions with normal driving. If you're tracking your car, check the plugs every 20,000-30,000 miles. Pull them out, look at the electrode wear, look at the color of the insulator tip. That'll tell you if the plugs are wearing normally or if your tune's off.

What You Get

Set of 4 NGK Ruthenium HX spark plugs

NGK part number: LKAR8BHX

NGK stock number: 91784

Replaces OEM part: 12290-59B-003

0.4mm ruthenium fine wire center electrode

0.8mm platinum projected square ground electrode

Trivalent metal plating for anti-corrosion and anti-seize

Alumina silicate ceramic insulator with copper core

Heat range 8 (correct for stock and lightly modified K20C and L15B motors)

Pre-gapped at 0.031 inch (0.8mm)

Rated for 120,000 miles under normal driving conditions

Fits Your Car

2017-2021 Honda Civic Si

2022-2026 Honda Civic Si

2017-2021 Honda Civic Type R

2023-2026 Honda Civic Type R

2023-2026 Acura Integra A-Spec

2024-2026 Acura Integra Type S

2021-2026 Acura TLX 2.0T

2019-2026 Acura RDX

2018-2022 Honda Accord 2.0T

Note: Heat range 8 is correct for stock and mildly modified motors. A weak or failing coil usually shows up as a misfire under load, a rough or shaky idle, hesitation when you get on the throttle, and noticeably worse fuel economy. On a turbo car it often gets worse under boost, since that's when the coil is working hardest and a marginal one starts breaking down. If you've pulled a cylinder-specific misfire code, the coil for that cylinder is one of the first things to swap and one of the easiest to rule out.

Sold Individually, So Buy What You Need

These are sold one at a time, which gives you options. If you've traced a misfire to a single cylinder, buy one and fix it. But if your car has real miles on it and one coil has already given up, the others have lived the exact same life under the same heat, and they're usually not far behind. Plenty of people order a full set and change them all while the coil cover is off, since the labor is nearly identical whether you're doing one or all of them. Your call based on mileage and how much you like doing the job twice.

Why Genuine Honda Matters On Ignition Parts

Coils are one of the more common places people get burned by cheap aftermarket parts. A coil that can't hold up to heat and voltage over time will start breaking down intermittently, which gives you a misfire that comes and goes and drives you crazy trying to reproduce. Stock nickel plugs are cheap but they wear out fast. The center electrode erodes, the gap opens from 0.044 inch to 0.055 inch after 40,000 miles, and now your ignition system's struggling to jump that wider gap. You get misfires under load, rough idle, and poor fuel economy. NGK Iridium IX plugs use an iridium center electrode instead of nickel. Iridium's six times harder than platinum and it doesn't erode like nickel does. The plug maintains the factory gap for 60,000-80,000 miles instead of wearing out at 30,000. You're getting consistent spark, better throttle response, smoother idle, and you're not replacing plugs every two years. These fit K20 and K24 engines in your RSX, Civic Si, TSX, Accord, CR-V, and Element. They're a direct replacement for the stock plugs. Same heat range, same reach, same thread pitch. Pull the old plugs out, gap these to 0.044 inch, thread them in, and you're done.

Here's Why Iridium Lasts Longer Than Nickel

Your stock spark plugs use a nickel alloy center electrode. Nickel's cheap and it works but it's soft. Every time the plug fires, a tiny amount of material erodes off the center electrode and the ground electrode. After 30,000 or 40,000 miles, enough material's worn away that the gap's opened up. Your plugs were gapped at 0.044 inch when they were new. Now they're at 0.050 or 0.055 inch. That wider gap requires more voltage to jump. Your ignition coils are working harder to fire the plugs. Eventually the coils can't generate enough voltage and you get misfires. Iridium's way harder than nickel. It erodes slower. An iridium plug maintains its gap two or three times longer than a nickel plug. You're getting 60,000-80,000 miles out of iridium plugs vs. 30,000-40,000 miles out of nickel plugs. That's fewer tune-ups and more consistent ignition performance over the life of the plug.

Fine Wire Center Electrode for Better Ignitability

NGK uses a fine wire iridium center electrode on these plugs. The electrode's 0.6mm in diameter. That's thinner than the nickel electrode on stock plugs. A thinner electrode concentrates the electrical energy into a smaller point. That makes it easier for the spark to jump the gap. You get more reliable ignition, especially on cold starts or when the engine's under load. The fine wire design also runs cooler than a thick electrode because there's less mass to heat up. That reduces the chance of pre-ignition or hot spots in the combustion chamber. The ground electrode's tapered. NGK cuts the ground electrode at an angle so the spark has a clean path to jump from the center electrode to the ground. That improves starting, idling, and throttle response. You'll notice the difference on cold mornings when the engine fires up faster and idles smoother.

Trivalent Metal Plating Prevents Seizing

NGK plates these plugs with trivalent metal plating. That's a corrosion-resistant and anti-seize coating on the threads. If you've ever tried to remove spark plugs that have been in the head for 60,000 miles and the threads are corroded, you know what a pain that is. The plugs seize in the threads and you're fighting to get them out without stripping the threads or breaking the plug. Trivalent plating prevents that. The coating keeps the threads from corroding and it acts as an anti-seize so the plugs come out clean when it's time to replace them. This is especially important on aluminum heads like the K series has. Aluminum's soft and the threads strip easily if the plug seizes.

Here's When You Use Iridium IX vs. Ruthenium HX

NGK makes two premium plug lines for performance applications: Iridium IX and Ruthenium HX. Iridium IX is the upgrade from stock nickel plugs. It's for stock engines, mildly modified engines, and street cars that see occasional spirited driving. If you're running a stock K20 or K24 with bolt-ons (intake, exhaust, tune), Iridium IX plugs are perfect. They last longer than stock plugs and they perform better. Ruthenium HX is the step up from Iridium IX. Ruthenium's even more durable than iridium and the plugs are designed for modified engines, turbo builds, and track use. If you're running a turbo K series making 300+ whp or you're tracking your car regularly, upgrade to Ruthenium HX. For most street cars and daily drivers with mild mods, Iridium IX is the right choice. You're getting way better durability than stock plugs without paying for features you don't need.

What You Get

NGK Iridium IX spark plugs for K20/K24 engines

Fine wire iridium center electrode (0.6mm diameter)

Tapered cut ground electrode for improved ignitability

Trivalent metal plating (anti-corrosion and anti-seize)

Iridium alloy six times harder than platinum

60,000-80,000 mile service life (vs. 30,000-40,000 for stock nickel plugs)

Direct replacement for OEM spark plugs (same heat range and reach)

Sold individually (K series engines use 4 plugs)

Fits These Cars

2007-2009 Acura MDX

2005-2008 Acura RL

2002-2006 Acura RSX Base/Type S

2004-2008 Acura TL Base/Type S

2004-2008 Acura TSX

2003-2007 Honda Accord

2002-2005 Honda Civic Si

2006-2011 Honda Civic DX/EX/LX

2006-2011 Honda Civic Si

2002-2009 Honda CR-V

2003-2011 Honda Element

2007-2013 Honda Fit

Note: Sold individually - K series engines use 4 spark plugs, order 4 for a complete set. DO NOT over-tighten spark plugs or you'll strip the threads in the aluminum head. Torque to 13 ft-lbs or hand-tighten with a spark plug socket until snug, then 1/16 turn more. These are an upgrade from stock nickel plugs for street cars and mildly modified engines. For turbo builds making 300+ whp or serious track use, consider upgrading to NGK Ruthenium HX plugs instead. Service interval: 60,000-80,000 miles under normal driving, 30,000-50,000 miles for modified engines or track use. If you're experiencing misfires, rough idle, or poor throttle response on old plugs, replacing them with fresh Iridium IX plugs will fix the problem as long as your ignition coils are still good.

2007-2009 Acura MDX
2005-2008 Acura RL

2002-2006 Acura RSX Base/Type S
2004-2008 Acura TL Base/Type S

2004-2008 Acura TSX

2003-2007 Honda Accord

2002-2005 Honda Civic Si

2006-2011 Honda Civic DX/EX/LX

2006-2011 Honda Civic Si

2002-2009 Honda CR-V

2003-2011 Honda Element

2007-2013 Honda Fit

(4) Spark Plugs

Compatible with 92-00 Civic and 93-97 Del Sol

Works with D15 and D16 Engines

Durable EPDM Silicone Jacket

Direct Aftermarket Replacement for Factory Parts

Description

Vehicle Fitment

Technical Data

Included

Install Guide

NGK Spark Plug Wire Set - 1992-2000 Honda Civic / 1993-1997 Del Sol (D Series)

Got a rough idle, a random misfire, or a check engine light that won't quit on your D-series Civic or Del
Sol? Before you go chasing ghosts, take a look at your spark plug wires. On a car this age, the original
ignition wires are usually decades old, and once that insulation hardens and cracks, the spark starts
jumping where it shouldn't instead of getting to your plugs. This NGK wire set puts that back to right.
It's a fresh set of quality plug wires built to OEM spec, so your ignition fires clean, your idle smooths
out, and the car runs the way it's supposed to again.

Why Tired Plug Wires Cause So Many Headaches

Here's what's going on when old wires go bad. Your plug wires carry the spark from the distributor to each
plug, and they take a beating from heat and time. As they age, the resistance climbs and the insulation
breaks down, so the spark starts arcing out to ground instead of firing your plug cleanly. That shows up
as the stuff that drives you nuts: a stumble under load, a rough or surging idle, hard starts, misfires
that get worse when it's hot or damp out, and worse fuel economy because you're not burning fuel
efficiently. Drop in a fresh set of good wires and a lot of those gremlins just disappear. It's one of the
cheapest, easiest fixes on the whole car, and it's often the one people overlook.

Built To Take The Heat

These aren't bargain-bin wires that cook themselves in a hot engine bay. The core is a 7mm low-resistance
magnetic core that delivers a strong, clean spark to every plug. The jacket is EPDM and silicone rated to
handle up to 250 degrees Celsius, so it holds up to the heat soak under your hood without breaking down.
Inside, fiberglass braiding adds dielectric strength so the spark stays where it belongs, plus tensile
strength so the wires survive being routed and pulled on during install and service. Heat range 8 is what the car shipped with. You get a 0.6 mm iridium center and a platinum ground so the gap stays put for a long service interval. You give up a standard nickel plug, and you give up a colder heat range. If you want 80,000 to 100,000 miles and a fine-wire spark in a stock or mildly built L15B7, this is the trade we like. Weak spark, a rough idle, or a misfire is why you need a new honda civic ignition coil, and this is the one for this car. NGK 48922 (U5099) is the stock-replacement ngk ignition coil that bolts onto the 2002-2005 EP3 Si (K20A3) and the 2006-2011 Si (K20Z3).

You get one pencil coil. After enough heat cycles the housing cracks, the boot tracks, or that cylinder just quits firing. NGK builds 48922 as a U5 pencil coil, one coil per plug, to OE fit. You give up the Honda box. You get a bolt-on 12V coil-on-plug with a 3-pin connector that sits on the same plug. We like this one for a daily Si because it is the stock pencil, not a story about more spark.

The Si is coil-on-plug. These engines fire 1-3-4-2, and a crossed wire will not start or will idle like it is on three. Pull one wire at a time. Twist the boot, don't yank the cable. A torn boot left on the plug is a common way to ruin a fresh set. Seat each new boot until it clicks on the plug and on the cap. A dab of dielectric grease inside the boot helps it seal and come off next time. Route the new wires in the factory clips so they don't sit on the exhaust manifold or the valve cover edge.

Look at the cap and rotor while the wires are off. The 90s Honda cap carbons up and the rotor burns a pit in the brass. Fresh wires on a toasted cap will still miss. If the miss stays on the same cylinder after you swap two wires, look at the plug and that tower, not the new set. Use the plug Honda spec'd for that engine. Don't gap a hotter plug to make up for tired wires. The coil is on the distributor. NGK builds it with a 0.6 mm fine-wire iridium center and a platinum pad on the ground electrode so both wear surfaces last. That's why these plugs go about 100,000 miles on Honda's maintenance schedule while a nickel plug is done in a third of that. They come pre-gapped at 1.1 mm. Don't touch the gap. Work on a cold engine. Pull one coil, swap one plug, torque it to NGK's 18 to 21.6 lb-ft spec, and move to the next hole so nothing falls into an open tube. Start every plug by hand. Cross-threading an aluminum head turns a 30 minute job into a bad weekend.

While the coils are out, check each boot for tears and look at the spring contacts. A torn boot will misfire right after a plug job and get the new plugs blamed. If your Civic is past 150k and still on original coils, plenty of owners do coils and plugs in one shot.
