The idea of this car was pretty simple. A clean, subtle color scheme on the outside, wide wheels and an outrageously awesome engine bay. This isn’t like all of the other build threads you see online, this car wasn’t built with the mindset of throwin’ dollar bills at it to have people drool over it. The wheels didn’t cost a million dollars and there aren’t any crazy-uber rare underground-one off JDM parts on it. Among the tens of thousands of nicely built Hondas it’s getting much harder to find one that stands out especially Del Sols.

To check out the build from the beginning Click Here.

This entry is dedicated to the art. The art of making a clean engine bay, the art of a clean swapping… the way it should be. I set out to find the right artist, someone who shares the vision and has an open mind to create something has never been published. Some people have called it graffiti but it’s more than that… it’s art. Marc Fresh was up to that task, a local street artist out of our hometown Baton Rouge, LA. Marc came by before the car went off the paint and we threw around some ideas, not many though. I was eager to get his artistic input on what we could do to make it stand out, he simply asked what type of colors we wanted to use. With everything in the air, Marc went on his way with the ideas brewing in his head.
A few weeks later, before the car came back from the paint shop, Marc showed up with some drawings, color schemes and patterns for us to review. After getting more ideas out, Marc left again to continue the brainstorming process. After a few delays, the car came back from paint a week or so behind schedule so Marc was notified the same day that the car came back. 2 hours after the car arrived, Marc showed up with his supplies ready to make some art.

The car rolled out of the trailer, on the lift ready to get going. When this picture was taken, we had 4 days to build the car in order to make it to a scheduled debut at Import Alliance 2009.

The original subframe was damage so along with all of the suspension, it was removed before the paint.

Sneak pic of the wheels on the car. The rear quarters we rolled and pulled to accommodate for the larger, wider wheel.

We covered the rest of the car so overspray wouldn't land ontop of the fresh paint.

I sat back and watched Marc do his thing. Here is how it went down:

After a minty green base, Marc started to add many other colors. It would have been simple to paint it all with a bunch of different colors and hit it with some clear, but Marc wanted to add another element to it, texture.

The pictures you just viewed were all taken within a 24hr time frame. The car rolled in Monday, July 20th around 4:30pm. Marc arrived around 5pm and got to work, he was finished 22 hours later. The clear dried throughout the following day and the rest of the car was put back together.

This car was put together (if you included the time on the engine bay) in four days. The brake line, fuel line, clutch line, and wire tuck were all done on Wednesday. The Interior, seats and body panels went in the car over the next two days. This car was loaded on the trailer Friday morning at 6am on its way to the debut at Import Alliance 2009 in Nashville, TN.

Shifter cable bushings are a cost-effective, simple way to add that notchy, crisp feel that you associate with a solid feeling shifter.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that all shifter cable bushings are created equal. Many companies make the mistake of assuming both bushings used in the k-series shifter cables can be replaced with solid metal or delrin bushing. This is not the case. Honda uses rubber bushings in their cables because it’s a cost-effective way to allow 2-degrees of freedom. A solid metal or delrin bushing allows only 1-degree of freedom. Generally speaking, eliminating a degree of freedom in the bushings translates into more effort required to shift and the potential to bend and ruin your shifter cables.

That’s why the Hybrid Racing incorporates a chrome-plated steel spherical bearing into their shifter bushings. This gives the crisp, notchy feel you expect from shifter bushings without the extra effort required to shift, like other brands of bushings.

Good ground connections are arguably the most important part of any electrical system. Without them, there’s no way for current to flow through an electrical system. Being certain that your electrical system is properly grounded is critical when it’s time to troubleshoot problems with any fuel injected car. Obviously, this is even more important in the case of an engine-swapped vehicle, where any number of electrical issues could arrise.

Hybrid Racing’s K Swap Ground Kit is a cost-effective way to be sure that you will not run into any problems that may be caused by improperly grounded components.

Despite being a fairly robust motor, k series engines have been found to have weak timing chain tensioners that fall victim to excessive wear when aftermarket cams are installed in the motor (and in some instances with stock cams). The fast ramp rate of aftermarket cams is the main cause of this. Unfortunately, without tearing the motor down after every use, it’s almost impossible to detect a worn tensioner before it’s too late. While installing a stiffer spring in an OEM tensioner, like other companies do, will slow down the wear of an OEM style tensioner, it will not eliminate it. The use of a stiffer spring will also cause the timing chain to stretch faster. For this reason, we designed our chain tensioner from scratch, ensuring it could take the abuse aftermarket cams cause without causing faster than normal stretching of the chain.

The Hybrid Racing Chain Tensioner is designed to be both stronger and more durable than the OEM Honda chain tensioner found on K Series motors. It is perfect for anyone who wants some added protection for their valuable motor.

The tensioner functions exactly like the OEM unit it replaces while improving upon the flaws of Honda’s design. The dual-ratchet design features hardened tool steel teeth that mesh with a heat treated chromoly piston. The teeth are crafted from the same material used for most the ratchets in high-end impact wrenches. The piston is designed to fit into the K series engine’s timing chain guide tighter than the OEM unit does; this helps to avoid misalignment of the ratcheting mechanism and the premature wear that often occurs when aftermarket cams are used in conjunction with the OEM K Series chain tensioner. In addition, the internal oil passageways have been optimized to respond to oil pressure increase faster than the OEM unit; this becomes critical in motors that rev quickly and to high rpms.

Each Hybrid Racing K Series Chain Tensioner is manufactured from scratch. It is not a rebuilt and rebranded OEM tensioner like those sold by other companies. The Hybrid Racing chain tensioner comes with reliability that has been proven through more than a year of the most abusive testing.
